Artichoke: The Start of a Lifelong Inability to Come Up with Good Model Names

This is one of many models around 2007-2008 where I attempted to use tessellation techniques to fold organic, lifelike looking plants. This model is essentially just a bunch of concentric bird bases, but it sprouts upwards in a way that reminds me of any number of cruciferous vegetables.

At the time, I had no idea what to call this. Originally I referred to it as a Hydrangea Expansion to imply that’s a 3D version of Fujimoto’s Hydrangea, before landing on Artichoke. Now that I’ve seen artichokes in their fully glory from sprouts to gnarly post-flowering husks, I think it’s a decently fitting name. I just wish I had folded it in a dark green.
